The 5 Zones That Mat First on Almost Every Doodle

By Alastair · 6 min

When It’s Too Late to Brush Out Mats

If your brush doesn't reach the undercoat where the tangles and mats hide, your groomer might be left with no choice.

Brush regularly with a slicker that reaches every layer of the coat, check for missed tangles with a comb, and confidently bring a tangle-free Doodle to their grooming appointment for the style of your choice.

When It’s Too Late to Brush Out Mats

The #1 Brushing Mistake

Only brushing the surface, leaving the tangles hiding underneath. Most brushes were not made for Doodles and don't reach the undercoat where the tangles live.

The #1 Brushing Mistake
Doodles Hate Brush Time Because...

Doodles Hate Brush Time Because...

  • Rigid brushes snag and pull on every tangle

  • Sharp pin tips are scratchy

  • Short pins don't reach the tangles, so they're left to tighten into painful mats.

Switch to the right tools, brush little and often, allow positive brushing experiences to stack over time and watch your Doodle relax and enjoy (!) brush time.

Tool Guide

Slicker Brush Vs. Comb

These tools do different jobs - you need both!

Slicker Brush
Step 1

Slicker Brush

Effectively detangles the whole coat. The flexible head adapts to your dog's body, absorbs resistance and reaches the undercoat where the tangles hide.

Finishing Comb
Step 2

Finishing Comb

Checks for missed tangles. After brushing, run the comb through the coat from root to tip. If it glides smoothly, your Doodle is tangle-free. If it snags, you have more work to do with the slicker brush.
