Each tool has one job. The Double Head Flexible Slicker brushes the main body. The Single Head Flexible Slicker reaches the tricky spots: armpits, behind the ears, legs and face. Yes. The top coat lies: it can look fine while the undercoat tangles. After brushing, run the comb through to the skin. If it glides like a hot knife through butter, all the way to the skin, you are tangle-free. If it snags, brush that spot again. It replaces guessing with knowing.

Our slickers work on curly, long and thick coats, including Poodles. They are not the right tool for short, flat coats such as a Labrador or Boxer.

If the coat is long enough to wave or curl, it can still tangle in the undercoat, so yes. Many Doodle parents find that once brushing is easier, they can keep the coat longer between grooms.

Yes, from 4 months old. The flexible heads and rounded, polished pins are gentle, and starting early is the best way to raise a Doodle who stays relaxed about brushing for life. Aim for 5 to 10 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week, plus one longer 15 to 20 minute session each week. Brush more often during the coat change (6 to 14 months) and on curly, dense coats. Short, regular sessions beat one long battle.

Mats form in the undercoat, close to the skin, not in the top coat you can see. A standard pet-shop slicker has 6 to 10mm pins, which only reach the top coat. Our flexible slickers have 16 to 18mm pins and the Extra Long Pin Slicker has 27mm pins.

Part the coat in sections and brush line by line so the brush reaches the skin, then move up a little and repeat. It is the correct way to brush a Doodle.

Between 6 and 14 months the puppy coat is replaced by the adult coat. Because Doodles don't shed like most dogs, the puppy coat gets caught in the adult coat and mats form close to the skin. Three signs it has started: the coat feels different underneath, knots appear behind the ears more often, and the coat looks less even.

Early tangles usually can, with the Extra Long Pin Slicker and patience. A felted mat, packed tight against the skin, usually can't be brushed out. A pelted coat always needs a shave-down. Your groomer will choose the kindest option for your dog.

Your dog isn't difficult. Often the brush was. A rigid head with short pins drags on tangles and hurts, so the dog learns to avoid the brush, brushing gets skipped, and the coat mats.
